                                                      How we began

In the late 1980's, David Coleman was a participant in a failed relationship.  The break-up
came down to one question: Who will have custody of the children.  In those day it was
typical for the courts to award custody of children to the mother and fathers had very little
rights.

David had been a stay at home dad and the primary caregiver.  His sons were 2 years and 6
months old.  Many had questions whether a man had the ability to nurture their children as
well as woman.  There was definite gender bias.

After all the smoke cleared, David had custody of a toddler and an infant.  It was a very
difficult road but he was able to endure.  He began raising his sons without the benefit of
their mother. She left and the children did not see her for nearly 20 years-  word spread fast
about the "man who's raising his babies.

Others began inquiring how David was able to gain custody of his sons.  For over a decade,
he helped other men prepare and file the legal paperwork necessary for them to have a
fighting chance of spending maximum amount of time with their children.  The more fathers
David helped, the more fathers came forward, seeking help.

It became clear that there was a need for these types of services.  Having worked with two
other father friendly organizations, David gained a lot of insight of how non-profit social
service agencies operated. Feeling a need to become more "hands-on" David decided to
provide the services others were unable to provide.  In 2005, Sacramento Dads incorporated
and David began helping fathers full time.

Today, Sacramento Dads has served over 550 parents and have made an impact to over
1500 children.  We have also developed and present eight personal development
workshops; provide bi-lingual services; publish a newsletter; provide case manager; and
operate a 24/7/12 Crisis Hot  Line; all at no cost to the public..

We will continue to provide our service as long as there is a need
